Background of the Study
Traditional beliefs and practices have a deep-rooted influence on healthcare behavior in many parts of Nigeria, including Benue State. These beliefs often dictate the treatment choices of individuals, especially when it comes to managing chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and tuberculosis (Okafor et al., 2023). While modern medicine offers evidence-based treatments for these conditions, traditional beliefs may lead patients to seek alternative therapies or to delay or completely avoid prescribed medications (Adamu & Salihu, 2024). This can have detrimental effects on their health, leading to worsened symptoms and complications.
Medication adherence is critical in the management of chronic diseases, and non-adherence can result in the progression of illness, increased hospitalization rates, and higher healthcare costs. Understanding how traditional beliefs impact medication adherence is essential for healthcare providers, especially nurses, who play a key role in educating patients and promoting adherence to prescribed treatments (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).
This study aims to assess the impact of traditional beliefs on medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State and to identify strategies to overcome these barriers in promoting better health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State often face challenges in adhering to prescribed medications due to deeply ingrained traditional beliefs. These beliefs sometimes conflict with medical recommendations, leading to poor adherence and consequently, worsening health conditions. While there is an increasing reliance on modern healthcare, traditional practices continue to influence the health-seeking behavior of patients, particularly those living in rural areas. Nurses play an important role in bridging this gap by educating patients and encouraging adherence to medical advice. However, little is known about how traditional beliefs specifically affect medication adherence in chronic disease management in Benue State.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of traditional beliefs on medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State.
To identify the factors that influence medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State.
To recommend strategies for improving medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State.
Research Questions
How do traditional beliefs affect medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State?
What factors influence medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State?
What strategies can be employed to improve medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State?
Research Hypotheses
Traditional beliefs significantly affect medication adherence among patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State.
Factors such as education level, socio-economic status, and access to healthcare significantly influence medication adherence in Benue State.
Interventions designed to address traditional beliefs and promote medication adherence significantly improve health outcomes for patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on patients with chronic illnesses in Benue State and explore the role of traditional beliefs in medication adherence. Limitations include the challenge of isolating the effects of traditional beliefs from other factors affecting adherence and the potential lack of representativeness in the sample.
